Welcome back to Network Navigator!
Understanding the types of networks available is the first step in building the right IT infrastructure for your business. Let’s break down three common network types: LAN, WAN, and VPN.
Local Area Network (LAN) connects devices within a small geographical area, like your office or building. It enables devices to share files, printers, and applications quickly and securely. LANs usually use wired Ethernet or Wi-Fi connections, providing fast speeds and low latency.
Wide Area Network (WAN) connects multiple LANs across broader locations — for example, linking several branch offices or connecting remote workers to a central office. WANs rely on technologies like MPLS or the public internet and typically involve slower speeds than LANs but cover much larger distances.
Virtual Private Network (VPN) allows secure remote access by creating an encrypted “tunnel” over the internet. VPNs protect data from interception and are crucial for enabling safe work-from-home setups or connecting multiple offices securely.
Choosing the right network type depends on your business size, geographic spread, and security needs. For many businesses, a hybrid approach combining LAN, WAN, and VPN offers the best mix of performance and protection.
In the next edition, we’ll explore network security — why it’s essential and how to protect your business from evolving cyber threats.
